What kind of good news are you looking for? A new king?
Jesus came to Israel at a critical point in their history. They were subject to a dominant foreign power. While there was peace, it was a Roman peace that favored Roman citizens. The common people wanted relief. So the news of a new king was really great news!
But it didn't turn out like they had hoped. They wanted a political revolution, not a spiritual revolution. So it comes as no surprise that at the "end of this story" the people are calling for this new king to be crucified. He was not the king they were looking for. It was like getting the present you need, not the present you want.
Life is like that. We often get what we need, but not what we want. In fact we get some things that we don't even realize because we were not thinking of these things as a gift. Clean water. Fresh air. Enough food for the day. Clean clothes. I lived for 12 years among people who had none of that. Now in Americ a I take so much of that for granted. So, you didn't get the king you wanted?
Maybe in this season of Christmas I need to get a new attitude, to really be grateful for the blessings I have already received. And, to rejoice in some of the things that are the most important in life.
I know Christmas is a gift giving time. But at the same time I want to be mindful of the king I received a long time ago. One whom I love like no other. Whose impact on my life outstrips all the other blessings under the tree.
