I have been reading a book lately, "The Grasshopper Myth." The author made an observation that most church website's purpose is to simply get people to attend their weekend service. I have to admit that is also why we have a website as well. His point was to find a way that ministry can be done by their website itself. What can our website do for you that other church websites cannot?
One thing that many of them do for you is to provide a link to a recent sermon. We used to do that as well. But like a lot of other churches we found that fewer people are listening to online sermons these days. We live in an "instant" society. People don't have the time or patience to sit still and listen to a recorded sermon, or read a full page Facebook post, or blog entry for that matter. (I keep mine short!)
What else can a church website do for you? I am still thinking about that. I don't want to waste your time. Whatever it is, it has to be short and simple. One thing we can do is to publish ideas for family activities. Another is to list URLs for spiritual resources we have found to be helpful. So in the coming weeks, I will focus on those two.
